Fight against corruption crucial for Ukraine’s EU accession – Commissioner Kos after meeting with SAPO, NABU heads

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos met with Oleksandr Klymenko, Head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO), and Semen Kryvonos, Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), expressing her “full support” for their work.

She wrote about the meeting on the social media platform X, according to Ukrinform.

“Met NABU and SAPO leadership: their fight against corruption is crucial for Ukraine’s EU accession and reconstruction. I reiterate my full support to their work: independent anti-corruption bodies are the backbone of the rule of law and a sound business climate,” the European Commissioner stated.

As previously reported, on July 22, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed a law reducing the powers of NABU and SAP. President Volodymyr Zelensky signed it the same day.

Protests against the new law were held in Kyiv and other cities across Ukraine.

On July 24, President Zelensky approved the draft law aimed at safeguarding the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption infrastructure.

On July 31, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the President’s proposed bill restoring the independence of NABU and SAP, passing it both in the first reading and in full

The European Union welcomed the adoption of the law that reinstates guarantees of independence for anti-corruption institutions, while also noting that unresolved issues remain.

European Commissioner Marta Kos emphasized that upholding fundamental values and fighting corruption must remain top priorities for Ukraine’s leadership.
