Putin’s promises cannot be trusted; Ukraine needs credible security guarantees – Kallas

This was stated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on the social media platform X, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

“Putin cannot be trusted to honour any promise or commitment,” she stressed.

Therefore, she said that security guarantees “must be strong and credible enough to deter Russia from re-grouping and re-attacking”.

Kaja Kallas added that the EU will contribute to these security guarantees, notably by the training of Ukrainian soldiers and strengthening Ukraine’s armed forces and defense industry.

The EU will also continue “targeting Russia’s war economy,” she stressed, adding that the next sanctions package against Moscow should be ready by next month.

“I have placed these topics at the top of our agenda for discussions next week among EU foreign and defence ministers,” Kaja Kallas summarized.

As reported by Ukrinform, on August 19, members of the European Council held a videoconference to discuss the outcomes of yesterday’s meetings in Washington, which were aimed at achieving a lasting and just peace in Ukraine.
