Ukraine needs about EUR 2B for additional gas imports – Svyrydenko

Ukraine will need approximately EUR 2 billion to finance additional gas imports, which will be covered through domestic reserves and assistance from international partners.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced this during the government's question-and-answer session in parliament on Friday, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"The required financing for additional natural gas imports amounts to about EUR 2 billion. It will be secured in two ways – through internal reserves and external partner support. The internal reserve includes the government's reserve fund, from which we indeed allocated funds yesterday, as well as financing from Ukraine's banking sector and Naftogaz operations. The second component is assistance from our partners in the form of grants and loans. We are cooperating with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank. In addition, Norway is providing a EUR 150 million grant," Svyrydenko said.

She added that a meeting was held today with Germany's Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Katherina Reiche, during which "an additional EUR 60 million contribution to the respective fund was announced, with these funds to be directed toward gas imports."

Svyrydenko recalled that Ukraine had planned to accumulate 13.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas in storage. This target has been met, but due to Russian attacks on gas infrastructure, Ukraine now urgently needs to secure additional import volumes.

On October 23, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the allocation of UAH 8.4 billion from the state budget's reserve fund to ensure a stable 2025-2026 heating season.
