On Wednesday, April 8, a pair of Polish F-16 fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 aircraft in the Baltic Sea, which was conducting a reconnaissance mission with its transponder turned off.

According to Ukrinform, the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command reported this on the social network X.

“On April 8, 2026, a duty pair of F-16 Polish Air Force fighters carried out a successful interception, visual identification, and escorting from the area of responsibility of a Russian Federation aircraft that was conducting a flight over the Baltic Sea. Polish fighters intercepted an Il-20 Russian aircraft carrying out a reconnaissance mission in international airspace, without a filed flight plan and with its transponder turned off. There was no violation of Polish airspace,” the post reads.

The interception of aircraft is not a demonstration of force but a basic tool for ensuring effective control over the country’s airspace. Its purpose is the rapid identification of objects that do not respond to calls from air traffic control, are flying without the required flight plan, or are violating applicable regulations, the command added.

It is emphasized that thanks to the interception procedure, it is possible to instantly determine the nature of the flight, assess the potential threat, and, if necessary, take corrective actions, such as changing the aircraft’s course or directing it to land. These actions help limit the risk of incidents and ensure the safety of both civilian air traffic and critical infrastructure.

As reported by Ukrinform, on March 13, a pair of Polish MiG-29 fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft in the Baltic Sea.
