Zelensky, von der Leyen discuss use of immobilized Russian assets
He said this on the Telegram messaging app, according to Ukrinform.
"We discussed the current diplomatic situation and the European Union's work on a decision regarding the use of frozen Russian assets for Ukraine's defense. We also coordinated our contacts for the near future," Zelensky said.
He also thanked von der Leyen for her clear position and messages in support of Ukraine during her address to the European Parliament earlier today.
"We see eye to eye: as long as Russia continues to rebuff all peace efforts, sanctions against it must be tightened, and defense and financial assistance for Ukraine must continue," Zelensky said.
The issue of transferring frozen Russian assets to Ukraine is to be resolved at the European Council meeting scheduled for December 11-12.
Earlier, von der Leyen stated that the proposal for a EUR 140 billion reparations-based loan for Ukraine, funded by frozen Russian assets, was a reliable and legal way to make Russia pay for the damage it has caused to Ukraine.
