Brazil advocates for a diplomatic resolution to the Russian-Ukrainian war through engagement with a wider range of international partners beyond Europe.

Brazilian Ambassador to Ukraine Rafael de Mello Vidal said this in a conversation with Ukrinform.

“The Brazilian population is deeply touched by all the suffering caused by the war in Ukraine, in special on the civilian population, children and families. It is a subject of daily discussion and it has great impact. The public commotion is reflected in Congress, also because of the almost one million Ukrainians living in Brazil. This is why the government is very committed to helping Ukraine and Russia find a diplomatic way out, to build bridges, to build dialogue, at least to an end to hostilities, to a cease-fire, that can create the necessary conditions for broader peace agreements,” the diplomat said.

Commenting on the shortcomings of earlier agreements aimed at resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Brazilian Ambassador emphasized the need for a more stable framework that includes a broader range of international participants—not just European actors.

“Maybe a new arrangement would be more stable, with new actors, besides European ones, who are fundamental, yes, but with new ones that can dialogue effectively with both sides and generate enough trust. We believe in dialogue, not in exclusion. Exclusion will never lead to peace,” he said.

As reported by Ukrinform, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that he had spoken twice with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to convince him to start peace talks on Ukraine.
