Temporary legal status may be revoked for 240K Ukrainians in U.S. with deportation to follow – Reuters
This was reported by Reuters, citing a senior official in Trump administration and three sources familiar with the matter, Ukrinform states.
“The move, expected as soon as April, would be a stunning reversal of the welcome Ukrainians received under President Joe Biden's administration,” the publication says.
It is noted that this decision could lead to expedited deportations.
Reuters writes that the planned rollback of protective status for Ukrainians was already underway before a dispute between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on February 28.
According to sources, this is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to strip legal status from more than 1.8 million migrants who were allowed entry into the U.S. under temporary humanitarian programs initiated during Biden’s presidency.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin stated that the department had no announcements on the matter at this time. The White House and the Ukrainian Embassy did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
As Ukrinform previously reported, on January 20, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending all foreign aid programs for 90 days to conduct reviews and determine whether they align with his policy objectives.
On January 24, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered a halt to all foreign aid operations, with the exception of emergency food assistance, which could apply to regions such as Gaza and Sudan.
