Ukraine must have security guarantees for agreement to end wat – Italian president
The Italian leader made this statement following his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Tokyo, Ukrinform reports, citing ANSA.
"Tokyo and Rome hope that a just peace in line with the principles of the UN Charter, adequately guaranteed at the international level, can be found for Ukraine, to put an end to this tragedy that the Russian aggression of three years ago caused," Mattarella said.
He also emphasized the importance of open markets and respect for international law. Mattarella reaffirmed Italy's commitment to strengthening its partnership with Japan.
"The hope for peace is a hope that Japan and Italy share, and they are making an important contribution in this regard, with the creation of open societies, with markets open to collaboration, with a willingness to cooperate in every field, with anyone, with any other country, with mutual respect and mutual trust," he said.
On February 19, Mattarella urged Russia to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and expressed hope for a just peace.
