In January-May 2025, Ukrainian sea ports handled 78,000 TEU of container cargo, which is about twofold higher compared to the same period last year.

The relevant statement was made by Ukrainian Communities and Territories Deputy Minister Andrii Kashuba in an interview with Ukrinform.

“During January-May 2025, we recorded 78,000 TEU of container cargo, which is about twofold higher compared to the same period of 2024. Therefore, we see a gradual recovery in this area of transport operations and increased container handling volumes,” Kashuba told.

In his words, the largest decline in container transportation was recorded in 2023 – only 67,000 TEU. This is about twofold lower compared to the volume handled in the first year of the Russian full-scale invasion (157,700 TEU).

In 2024, there was a certain revival of the market. Thus, at the end of the year, the above indicator came to about 130,000 TEU.

At the same time, as emphasized by Kashuba, the performance of the container shipping sector remains far from the pre-invasion levels.

“…this mode of transportation is very sensitive to the security component. Container transportation mainly involves global operators, whose security standards currently do not allow them to fully resume operation in our waters,” Kashuba explained.

A reminder that the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) is testing underwater drones to inspect port infrastructure. The equipment was provided free of charge by the Norwegian side.
