Verkhovna Rada calls on partners to strengthen nuclear safety and increase pressure on Russia
According to a Ukrinform correspondent, Resolution No. 15133 was supported by 311 deputies.
In particular, the Verkhovna Rada appeals to the parliaments and governments of foreign states, the United Nations, and the International Atomic Energy Agency in connection with the 40th Anniversary of the Chornobyl Disaster to prevent the Russian Federation from violating the international nuclear safety regime as a result of targeted attacks on the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
The Ukrainian Parliament calls on international partners to strengthen global nuclear safety, in particular by developing new, effective mechanisms to protect nuclear facilities and to hold accountable those who violate relevant norms and rules.
MPs also call on partners to compel Russia to cease violations at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, including the withdrawal of military personnel, the cessation of control, and the halting of shelling.
The Verkhovna Rada calls on the international community to unite to restore damaged Ukrainian nuclear facilities, to intensify efforts to achieve a just and sustainable peace based on Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and to increase aid to Ukraine and pressure on the aggressor state.)
The appeal also calls for participation in the donor conference on April 26, 2026, and for funding the restoration of the Chornobyl confinement structure.
As reported, the Assembly of Donors to the International Cooperation Account will reallocate 30 million euros for the preparation of engineering solutions and the procurement of equipment for the restoration of the New Safe Confinement (NSC).
On the night of February 14, 2025, a Russian combat drone carrying an explosive warhead struck the shelter covering the destroyed fourth power unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
According to IAEA experts, the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, damaged during the drone strike in February, has lost its primary safety functions; however, its main structures and monitoring systems have not sustained permanent damage.
