Drone strike on Sumy apartment building: Death toll rises to six, nine injured

The death toll from a Russian drone strike on an apartment building in Sumy has risen to six, with nine people injured.

The Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office said this in a post on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.

Authorities reported that the bodies of another married couple were recovered from the rubble.

"As of 15:30, six people were killed in the enemy's attack on a high-rise building, including three married couples — a 74-year-old man and his 69-year-old wife, a 65-year-old man and his 64-year-old wife, and a 61-year-old man and his 61-year-old wife," the post said.

The Sumy City Council stated on Telegram that ten apartment buildings sustained damage in the attack, with 462 windows shattered or destroyed.

"A total of 462 windows were affected in ten multi-story residential buildings, including 241 balcony frames, 40 entrance windows, and 181 apartment windows," the report detailed.

City infrastructure and municipal security officials have inspected the damaged buildings. In total, 42 pieces of equipment and 298 personnel were deployed to respond to the aftermath of the attack.

A Russian Shahed drone struck the residential building overnight. Initial reports indicated four fatalities, including two married couples, and nine injuries, among them an eight-year-old girl. Emergency services rescued four people, including a child, while 118 residents were evacuated, and 11 received medical assistance.

In response to the tragedy, Sumy has declared January 30-31 as days of mourning for those killed in the attack.
