Language commission does not monitor compliance with spelling rules
This was stated by Yuliia Chernobrov, chair of the National Commission on State Language Standards, in an interview with Ukrinform.
"The Commission does not have the authority to monitor compliance with the rules. But it is important to understand that spelling is the only guideline that ensures high-quality and clear communication, especially in writing," Chernobrov said.
She emphasized that uniform language standards are also a matter of national security.
"A language standard is a social contract. It works when the majority sees value in it. Institutional leadership is crucial here: if the state and all government bodies follow the spelling rules, others will follow suit. Cultural prestige—through films, TV series, and the media—is also important. High-quality content encourages adherence to the rules far more effectively than the strictest enforcement," said the head of the National Commission.
She emphasized that every person must realize that correct speech, proper spelling, and a rich vocabulary are the hallmarks of a responsible citizen of a free Ukraine.
As reported, the National Commission on State Language Standards has approved Ukrainian spelling as the standard for the state language.
