Ukraine at UN calls for immediate investigation into Iranian drones supplies to Russia

Deputy Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Khrystyna Hayovyshyn stated at a meeting of the UN Security Council that the investigation into the supply of Iranian drones to Russia should be launched immediately.

As an Ukrinform correspondent reported from New York, Hayovyshyn urged "all states to consider any possible steps to stop supplies of such UAVs, missiles or conventional weapons from Iran that could be used in Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine."

The diplomat noted that Ukraine had appealed to the UN Security Council on October 14 with a request to start a corresponding independent investigation. "In our letter, we drew attention to the alarming situation around Iran's Mohajer and Shahed UAVs supplies to Russia, particularly at the end of August 2022," the Deputy Permanent Representative said.

According to her, Ukraine informed the Security Council about Russia's use of long-range Iranian drones to attack civilian population and infrastructure facilities. "This is a flagrant violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action signed by China, France, Germany, Great Britain, the United States, the European Union, and Russia itself, and then adopted by UN Security Council Resolution 2231 in 2015," Hayovyshyn added.

She noted that the deliberate abuse of the provisions of the UN Charter to obstruct the investigation "is an obvious attempt to put pressure on the Secretariat in order to avoid its own responsibility."

Russia initiated the UN Security Council meeting in response to the letters sent to the Security Council by France, Germany, Great Britain, and the USA, noting that the Iranian-made drones supplies to the Russian Federation run counter to Resolution 2231. Russia claims that the UN leadership is not authorized to send experts for inspections at the call of organization members.
