Film about American journalist killed in Irpin among Oscar nominees
As reported by Ukrinform, this was announced by NV.
The film was nominated in the category Best Documentary Short Film.
Other nominees in the category include All the Empty Rooms, Children No More: Were and Are Gone, The Devil Is Busy, and Perfectly a Strangeness.
The world premiere of Armed Only with a Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud took place at the SXSW Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award in the Documentary Short category.
Renaud was killed by Russian troops on March 13, 2022. He became the first American journalist to be killed while covering Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.
His younger brother and colleague, Craig Renaud, retrieved Brent’s body and his final footage from Ukraine, brought them back to their home state of Arkansas, and made a film about him.
The film is made in the vérité style – a documentary filmmaking approach that seeks maximum realism. It features footage from the brothers’ reporting trips around the world, including Iraq, where they were embedded with the Arkansas National Guard; Haiti after the 2010 earthquake; Somalia during the war; Honduras, from where migrants were traveling to the United States; as well as Brent’s final footage after his arrival in Ukraine.
As reported by Ukrinform, on January 22, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 98th Academy Awards.
The documentary 2000 Meters to Andriivka by Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov did not make the final five nominees in the category Best Documentary Feature Film.
