The recently adopted law on multiple citizenship by the Verkhovna Rada paves the way for a civilized resolution of dual citizenship challenges affecting Ukrainians of Hungarian descent.

Ambassador of Ukraine to Hungary Fedir Shandor said this in an interview with Ukrinform.

“The new law allows those who previously renounced Ukrainian citizenship to reconnect with their families, return to their communities, and once again feel part of Ukrainian society,” Shandor explained. “The new law on multiple citizenship also makes it possible to solve the problem of Hungarian passports for Ukrainian citizens who are ethnic Hungarians reside predominantly in the Zakarpattia region”.

According to Shandor, many individuals who previously felt uncertain or concerned now feel reassured.

He also noted that the Ukrainian passport is now seen as a passport to be proud of.

“Of course, a passport is not only about rights—it also entails responsibilities, including military service. These are the challenges of our time. But in the long run, it will become a source of great pride,” the ambassador said.

As earlier reported, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the first countries with which Ukraine may establish dual citizenship procedures will likely be those with significant Ukrainian populations. These include Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and the Baltic states. The President added that the final list would be determined following consultations with the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Verkhovna Rada chairman.
