Zelensky signs law granting citizenship to spouses of AFU personnel

Ukrinform
President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law enabling the spouses of Ukrainian citizens who are or were involved in defending Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty to obtain Ukrainian citizenship.

According to Ukrinform, this information is confirmed in the bill’s status on the Verkhovna Rada website.

The law allows the spouse of a Ukrainian citizen serving in the military — or who previously served and was killed (or died) in the line of duty, or was discharged under specific legal grounds — to acquire Ukrainian citizenship by submitting a declaration renouncing their foreign nationality.

Additionally, foreign spouses of those who defended Ukraine will be able to restore their Ukrainian citizenship if they were previously Ukrainian citizens.

Furthermore, the law establishes immigration quotas for foreign nationals who come to Ukraine to reunite with military personnel.

As Ukrinform previously reported, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed this law on January 8.
