USAID survey: Trust of Ukrainian citizens in courts grows fourfold

Over the past year, the trust of Ukrainian citizens in courts has increased up to 20% due to implementation of judicial reform.

This is evidenced by the results of the all-Ukrainian citizens ’survey regarding the independence and accountability of the judiciary and the attitude towards the judicial reform, which was conducted by Gfk Ukraine in September 2018 at the initiative of USAID’s “New Justice” Sector Reform Program.

In particular, the program experts note that the level of trust in the courts tends to increase thanks to the judicial reform. In 2018, the level of public confidence in the courts increased by 6% compared to 12% of trust, which was recorded based on the results of similar research conducted by the USAID New Justice program in 2017. Despite the fact that this figure was 5% in 2015, the public confidence in the courts increased fourfold in 2018 due to the reform.

According to the results of the sociological survey, current Ukrainians’ level of trust in the courts is greater that that in the Verkhovna Rada (11%), political parties (13%), the Cabinet of Ministers (13%), the President (15%), and the National Agency for Prevention of Corruption (15%).

A total of 2,478 Ukrainian citizens from all the regions of Ukraine, except Crimea and temporarily occupied territories in Donbas, participated in the survey from September 12 to October 1, 2018. The questionnaire was prepared by Ukrainian and international experts.
