Zelensky: If Russia rejects diplomacy, US and Europe must strengthen Ukraine
He made the remarks while answering journalists' questions, Ukrinform reports.
"I think there can be no hints [of additional sanctions] yet because we do not currently have confirmation that the Russians will definitely reject a peace agreement. Although, of course, I understand that they certainly do not want it," Zelensky said.
He suggested that if the Americans can put more pressure on Russia, it might be possible to move toward a diplomatic track.
"Ukraine wants this war to end. And if Russia rejects the United States' demands to end this war soon, then it will certainly be necessary to strengthen Ukraine, because this would mean that one side of the war – Russia – has rejected the diplomatic path. That means we need to strengthen the other side – Ukraine. And that means weapons, sanctions, and financial support," Zelensky said.
On December 17, Zelensky noted that remarks from Moscow indicate that Russia is preparing to continue the war in 2026. He urged partners, particularly in the United States, not only to observe but also to respond to these statements.
