Rising conservative Republican dissent over Trump’s stance on Russia and Ukraine – expert
Senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, Adrian Karatnycky, stated this in an interview with Ukrinform.
Commenting on Trump's controversial remarks referring to President Volodymyr Zelensky as a "dictator" — a statement the U.S. president later walked back — the expert noted that such accusations provoked a strong reaction among some Republicans in Congress, conservative media, and commentators. According to him, this marked the beginning of an emerging divergence from Trump’s approach to discussions involving Russia and Ukraine.
Karatnycky suggested that this disagreement is likely to intensify over time, "especially if certain unpopular budget cuts and domestic policy decisions continue to be negatively perceived by the American public." He mentioned, for example, Elon Musk’s political activism, cuts to federal funding, and reductions in key government functions.
"The more Trump's approval ratings decline, the more inclined Republicans — alongside Democrats — will be to criticize certain aspects of his administration, particularly in foreign and security policy," the expert said.
Many Republicans are concerned not only about Trump’s stance on Ukraine, Europe, and Russia but also about his intention to significantly reduce defense spending, as they perceive threats from both Russia and China, he added.
As reported by Ukrinform, U.S. President Donald Trump recently distanced himself from previous statements in which he referred to the Ukrainian President as a "dictator without elections."
