China is closely monitoring the developments in Syria, calling on the parties to the Syrian conflict to take measures to ensure the safety of Chinese institutions and citizens in this country.

This is stated in a statement by the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Ukrinform reports.

"China is closely monitoring the developments in Syria and hopes that the country will restore domestic stability as soon as possible," the statement said.

It notes that the Chinese government has helped Chinese citizens leave Syrian territory in a safe and orderly manner and remains in contacts with those who remain in the country.

"We call on all parties to the conflict in Syria to take practical measures to ensure the safety of Chinese institutions and personnel in Syria," the foreign ministry said.

The Foreign Ministry claims that the Chinese Embassy in Syria continues its work to provide assistance to Chinese citizens in need.

Since the start of the offensive by opposition forces against the Bashar al-Assad's regime, the Chinese government has avoided public support for any of the parties to the conflict, traditionally stating the need for a cessation of hostilities as soon as possible and settlement of disputed issues through negotiations.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, the head of the National Coalition of the Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces, Hadi Al-Bahra, announced on Sunday the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime, which had ruled in Syria for 24 years.
