KYIV, July 31 /UKRINFORM/. Yana Shemyakina has brought the first gold medal for Ukraine at the 2012 London Olympics after winning the women's individual epee tournament on Monday.

In the final game, the 26-year-old resident of Lviv defeated Britta Heidemann of Germany 9-8 in extra time. China's Sun Yujie won a bronze medal in the third-place game against South Korea's Shin A Lam (15-11), UKRINFORM reported.

On her way to claiming the gold, Shemyakina earned five victories - over Russian Lyubov Shutova (15-12), Ana Maria Branza (14-13) and Simona Gherman (15-14) of Romania, China's Sun Yujie (14-13) and Heidemann.

As reported, Olena Kostevych from Chernihiv (shooting) and Yuliya Kalina from Mariupol (weightlifting) earlier won bronze medals.
