Constitutional Court deems Zelensky's decree on parliament dissolution constitutional

Ukraine's Constitutional Court has declared constitutional a presidential decree on the early termination of powers of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the calling of snap elections, according to the court's website.

"The Constitutional Court of Ukraine has issued a judgment in the case under a constitutional motion filed by 62 people's deputies of Ukraine regarding the compliance with the Constitution of Ukraine (constitutionality) of Ukrainian presidential decree No. 303/2019 'On the Early Termination of Powers of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Calling of Early Elections' of May 21, 2019," the court said in a statement on Thursday, June 20.

With this decision, the Constitutional Court recognized the presidential decree on the parliament's dissolution as constitutional, the statement said.

According to the statement, the decision of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is binding, final, and cannot be appealed.

Sixteen judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine participated in the voting.

President Volodymyr Zelensky on May 21 signed a decree dissolving the Verkhovna Rada of the eighth convocation and setting snap elections for July 21 this year.
