Zhytomyr region governor denies fraud in border fortification projects
Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration (RMA) Head Vitalii Bunechko stated this in an interview with Ukrinform.
“Based on the information I have, no cases of inflated costs in the construction of fortifications have been recorded in Zhytomyr region,” Bunechko said.
According to him, the situation on the Belarusian border is under constant control of military command and special services. Defensive and surveillance capabilities along the border continue to be reinforced.
“We constantly support military units and border guards serving there. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the region has allocated more than UAH 3.1 billion to strengthen defense capabilities. Additionally, last year nearly UAH 2.5 billion from the state, regional, and community budgets was allocated to build a deeply layered defense system in Zhytomyr region,” the governor added.
All fortification projects and layouts were provided by military command. The construction process was subject to both design and technical supervision. The fortifications have been handed over to the State Special Transport Service.
Bunechko also rejected claims that fake companies acted as contractors during the construction works on the border.
“The report you refer to stated that the contracting company subcontracted other organizations. This is not prohibited under the terms of the contract. They duly informed our Department of Regional Development, which was the client, about their intentions. The work was verified by design and technical supervision, and the facilities were accepted by representatives of the military command. Moreover, the contractor’s work resulted in budget savings of UAH 1.5 million,” the governor said.
As reported, despite the conclusion of the Russia-Belarus Zapad-2025 exercises, the Belarusian border remains under close attention of Ukraine’s Defense Forces, as the threat has not disappeared.
