The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine has launched criminal proceedings over an ecocide following Russia's seizure of the Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plants.

Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova said this at a press conference on Russia's crimes against Ukraine, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

In particular, Venediktova emphasized that the seizure of the Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plants poses a threat of a nuclear explosion.

"It could have been a second Chornobyl disaster, but with ten times worse consequences. The Russian population could have been also affected, but this seemed insignificant to the aggressor," she said.

Venediktova stressed that the Prosecutor's Office has already opened the case over the ecocide, as well as continues documenting and investigating all war crimes.

As reported, the Zaporizhzhia NPP has been under the control by the Russian army since March 4. The enemy captured the Chornobyl area on February 24, and since then the Ukrainian staff at the site have not been allowed to leave the station.
