Zelensky hopes French support will not decline after Macron leaves office

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he believes Ukraine enjoys broad support across French society and expressed hope that this backing will not diminish after the end of Emmanuel Macron's presidential term.

He made the remarks during a briefing in Munich while responding to a question about Macron's term ending next year, Ukrinform reports.

"Emmanuel is with us. One year is still, essentially, a quarter of this war – it is a long period. I hope we can end this war within a year. Of course, much depends on the leader, but no less depends on public support. I believe the people of France support Ukraine and do not support Putin. That is why we count on this support and hope it will not decrease," Zelensky said.

At the same time, he noted that it would be a serious problem if France's future leader were to promote Russian narratives.

Macron was re-elected for a second consecutive term as President of France in 2022. His term is set to expire in May 2027.
