Czech President Petr Pavel would like Ukraine to become an EU member as soon as possible, but without bypassing the rules and procedures, which would be detrimental to Ukraine itself.

He expressed this position in remarks to journalists on the sidelines of the GLOBSEC international security forum in Prague, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.

“I think the EU accession process should be as fast as possible, but not outside the rules. All requirements must always be met; otherwise, it will not be in Ukraine’s own interest,” Pavel said.

Speaking about the possibility of opening EU-Moldova membership negotiations in June, he called it “entirely possible,” as the country has demonstrated the most progress among all states seeking EU membership.

As reported by Ukrinform, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz proposed accelerating Ukraine’s accession to the EU by first allowing “associate membership.”
