Macron: Dialogue with Putin “not a matter of days”
He made the remarks after an informal EU leaders’ summit held at the Alden Biesen Castle in Belgium, Ukrinform reports, citing Le Figaro.
“It's not a matter of days; we are preparing things. I think that above all, we need to work on ourselves now, on what we want to ask for,” the French President said.
According to Macron, Europeans must prepare in order to start discussions “at the right time.”
“And what do we want? We want security guarantees for Ukraine, but we also want things for Europeans,” he added. Among these, he named prosperity and the future, as well as Europe’s security architecture.
In December, the French President announced his intention to resume direct talks with his Russian counterpart and, in early February, sent his diplomatic adviser to Moscow to prepare discussions at a “technical level.”
As previously reported, President Emmanuel Macron believes it is necessary to restore structured dialogue between Europe and Russia, without shifting responsibility for future negotiations and decisions exclusively to the United States and without exerting pressure on Ukraine.
