Foreign Ministers of Lublin Triangle call for urgent reinforcement of Ukraine’s air defenses

The foreign ministers of the Lublin Triangle countries strongly condemned the recent intrusion of Russian drones into Polish territory, calling it a deliberate and coordinated strike — an unprecedented provocation and escalation of tension.

This is stated in a Joint Statement by Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, and Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Ukrinform reports with reference to Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The diplomats stressed that Russia’s actions, along with Belarus’s consent to use its airspace, pose a direct threat to the security of all countries in the region. They emphasized that only coordinated joint steps can ensure safety.

The ministers noted Ukraine’s readiness to share intelligence and operational information with Poland, Lithuania, and other partners to create an effective early warning system and protection against Russian missile and drone attacks. They emphasized the need for closer coordination and rapid interaction among air defense structures.

“We call on partners to urgently strengthen Ukraine’s air defense and support Lithuania and Poland in their efforts to secure eastern flank of NATO and EU. Only adequate and strong response will prevent further escalation,” the statement reads.

The diplomats also warned of a new wave of Russian disinformation triggered by the incident and urged societies to remain vigilant and alert to manipulation by Russia.

“Together, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine reaffirm that unity, strength and cooperation – notably with our allies and partners in NATO and the EU – are the only ways to effectively counter Russian aggression and safeguard the security of our people,” the ministers concluded.

As reported, overnight on September 10, Polish forces shot down drones that violated Polish airspace. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Polish forces had recorded 19 drones intruding into the country’s airspace.

Following the incident, Warsaw invoked NATO’s Article 4, which provides for consultations among member states when one of them considers its territorial integrity, political independence, or security to be threatened.
