Zelensky: US too often demands concessions from Ukraine, not Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that in the negotiation process, the United States frequently focuses on the need for concessions from Ukraine rather than from Russia.

He made the remarks during a speech at the Munich Security Conference, Ukrinform reports.

"We truly hope that the trilateral meetings next week will be serious, substantive, helpful for all of us. But honestly, sometimes it feels like the sides are talking about completely different things. The Russians often speak about some spirit of Anchorage and we can only guess what they really mean. The Americans often return to the topic of concessions and too often those concessions are discussed in the context only of Ukraine, not Russia," Zelensky said.

He also noted that Europe is practically absent from the negotiation table. "It's a big mistake to my mind," he added.

According to Zelensky, Ukraine is making every effort to achieve a genuine peace. This is the focus of the entire peace process, including today's planned meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Meanwhile, the Russians, he said, are hoping for a repeat of the "Munich conspiracy."

"It seems Putin hopes to repeat Munich and not Munich 2007 when they only spoke about dividing Europe, but Munich 1938 when previous Putin began dividing Europe in reality. It would be an illusion to believe that this war can now be reliably ended by dividing Ukraine," Zelensky said.

As reported, the next round of trilateral talks between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia is scheduled for February 17-18 in Geneva.
