Macron: Stepping away from Ukraine not in U.S. geopolitical interest

French President Emmanuel Macron is working to restore dialogue between Ukraine and the United States following recent developments in the Oval Office. He aims to convince Washington that continuing financial and military support for Kyiv aligns with America's strategic interests.

In an interview with La Tribune Dimanche, Macron stressed the need for calm and constructive engagement after recent tensions, Ukrinform reports.

"I think that beyond the anger, everyone needs to return to calm, respect, and recognition, so that we can move forward concretely because what is at stake is too important," Macron said.

He emphasized his goal of "pacifying relations," which he has already begun by speaking with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump.

"On these subjects, it is preferable to have a discussion that is strategic and confidential in order to move forward and to clear up misunderstandings between people, but not in front of witnesses," Macron said.

He also added that the U.S. has no choice but to re-engage in this dialogue.

"The manifest destiny of the Americans is to be on the side of the Ukrainians, I have no doubt about it. What the United States has done over the past three years is entirely consistent with its diplomatic and military tradition. I want to make the Americans understand that disengagement from Ukraine is not in their interest," he said.

Macron reiterated that a fair and lasting peace cannot be achieved by abandoning Ukraine. He warned that if Washington were to agree to a ceasefire without security guarantees for Kyiv, its geopolitical deterrence against Russia, China, and other global actors would instantly collapse.
