The war in Ukraine must end with a just peace so Türkiye and Germany will pursue cooperation in this context.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated this after meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Ankara Wednesday night, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“We have long stated that the war in Ukraine must end with a just peace. Today we also consulted on the issue with my German counterpart,” Erdogan said.

He emphasized that Türkiye and Germany would continue their cooperation in the context of regional issues, such as developments in Syria, the situation of Gaza, and the war in Ukraine.

“In this context, I believe Germany will provide the necessary support to Türkiye’s efforts to rebuild Syria. Everyone has a great responsibility to respect the ceasefire declared in Gaza,” Erdogan said.

The German president stated both countries have a common interest in establishing peace in the region.

“Proposals for the emigration or expulsion of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip have caused great concern and fear in all the meetings I have held. Such proposals are unacceptable from the point of view of international law. It is also necessary to create an important basis for future negotiations with the U.S. administration,” Steinmeier said.

The German president announced the decision to provide Türkiye with the first tranche of a EUR 140 million loan for reconstruction in the regions affected by the earthquakes in February 2023, including for building quake-resistant schools.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk spoke with his Turkish counterpart Numan Kurtulmus, discussing the consequences of the latest Russian attacks, interparliamentary cooperation, and post-war reconstruction.
