Pentagon chief, Ukraine’s defense minister discuss Russian threats

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had a phone call on January 13 with Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, during which the parties discussed Russia’s continued military buildup in and around Ukraine.

That’s according to Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby, who spoke with the press on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"Secretary Austin reaffirmed unwavering U.S. support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including ongoing efforts to build the capacity of Ukraine’s forces through the provision of defensive assistance," Kirby said.

According to the Pentagon spokesman, the two defense chiefs expressed support for diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and committed to "continuing their close coordination."
