Scholz calls for reviving Normandy format, preserving Ukraine’s gas transit role

This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz who spoke at a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Warsaw, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

Scholz said discussing that the situation around Ukraine during the talks was "right and necessary" as "alarming new movements" are being observed along the Ukrainian border, where Russian troops have been amassed.

"It is therefore very important and understandable that the united Europe has made it clear – we do not accept and that we do not agree with what’s happening there. We, as the European Union, Germany, and Poland, emphasize the inviolability of borders in Europe and the fact that everyone can rely on us not accepting violations of these borders ... No one should think they can simply violate borders without serious consequences," Scholz said.

The German chancellor considers it important to grasp any opportunity to de-escalate. This is especially true of the Normandy format, he added," which should continue to be used for good cooperation as a prospect and a tool for mutual discussion."

Scholz expressed regret that the situation over the recent years “has not progressed as many had hoped,” stressing that work needs to be further revitalized. Therefore, he noted, the issue will be brought up at the European Council’s meeting

When asked, in the light of the Russian military buildup near Ukraine, about Germany's stance to Nord Stream 2, which is being actively opposed by Poland, Scholz offered no direct answer. At the same time, he said: “Among the pipeline infrastructure we have today is a pipe that runs through Ukraine. We feel responsibility to this end... We will continue to feel this responsibility for making gas transit remain a successful business in Ukraine, and we will ensure that,” the chancellor stressed.

He recalled that Germany had made efforts toward making sure the transit agreement is expended, and that it will pursue this work in the future.

The head of the German government also pointed to an earlier deal reached with the U.S. government to “help Ukraine become a country that will be a great source of renewable energy and the relevant production needs." He added that specific discussions were ongoing on the issue.

It should be recalled that Scholz arrived in Warsaw in one of his first visits as Chancellor.

Despite all the contradictions, he stressed, Germany and Poland are neighbors and friends, partners in the EU and NATO.
