U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for secretary of state Rex Tillerson has said that Russia does not have a legal right to Crimea.

He said this during his Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday, Pentagon correspondent for The Wall Street Journal Paul Sonne reported on Twitter.

"Tillerson says Russia does not have a legal right to Crimea. "That was a taking of territory that was not theirs," reads statement.

Tillerson also said that after the situation in Crimea "the United States should have provided Ukraine with border surveillance and defensive weapons to prevent conflict in east."
