Family of five killed in Odesa storm trapped as door stuck — media
This was reported by Suspilne, whose correspondent spoke with the neighbors of the deceased family.
Two men, two women, and a girl around 8 years old were displaced persons from Ukrainka. They lived in the basement of a two-story building and were at home during the rainstorm.
Neighbor Vira said that the family had settled here about a year ago: "Five people, they are very decent people... Everything suited them, because they had a boiler, a washing machine, a kitchen, and hot and cold water."
According to the woman, they could not open the door because it was jammed. Neighbor Victor said that the water rose about four meters in 15 minutes.
“It was very fast... Like a dam burst or something... The deepest was about 5.5 or 6 meters.”
Rescuers found the victims in the basement while pumping water out of it. According to local residents, the water rose to the level of the second floor of the building.
On September 30, Odessa received almost two months' worth of rainfall in seven hours. Ten people died as a result of the heavy downpour.
The disaster caused serious damage to the city's infrastructure. A number of streets and two sewage pumping stations were flooded.
According to preliminary data, 286 private houses and 384 apartment buildings were flooded in all districts of Odesa, said Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov.
According to him, the Kyiv district was the most affected, with 185 private houses damaged.
As reported by Ukrinform, October 2 was declared a day of mourning in Odesa due to the deaths caused by the bad weather.
