Ukrainian electricity grid to become part of European grid in 2023

"The necessary documents have already been signed, we just need to work on this task. We hope that unification of Ukrainian and European grids will happen already in 2023. This will enable us, including our nuclear generation, even to export electricity, and gain profits. In fact, the problem of export from Belarus is greatly exaggerated. Frankly speaking, there are not very large volumes," Prime Minister of Ukraine Oleksiy Honcharuk said on the air of Ukrainian TV channel.

According to Honcharuk, the Ukrainian electricity grid has long been connected with the Russian, Belarusian and Moldovan ones. However, joining the European grid requires withdrawal from the grid unified with Russia and Belarus.

"In order to join the European grid, we will have to disconnect from the Russian and Belarusian grids. We will not evade this, and this historic decision has already been made. That is, we are gradually getting to this," the Prime Minister added.

On October 18, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine lifted restrictions on imports from Belarus and Russia and the sale of such electricity in the market of bilateral agreements. Previously, the electricity from the countries that are not Energy Union members could only be sold on the day-ahead market and on the balancing market.
