European Commission welcomes signing of Ukraine-Russia gas transit contract

Vice-President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič has welcomed the conclusion of Ukraine-Russia contract for the transit of Russian gas to the European market through the territory of Ukraine.

“My strong appreciation for all the hard work and effort! Building on last week's political deal between Russia, Ukraine and the European Commission, the transit contract between respective companies - securing continuous gas flows to Europe as of 1/1/2020 - is now signed and sealed,” Šefčovič posted on Twitter.

The Vice-President of the European Commission also welcomed the interconnection agreement between Ukraine and Slovakia.

“At the same time, I welcome the interconnection agreement reached between Ukraine and Slovakia, and forcefully facilitated by the European Commission. All pieces for the transit of gas via the Ukrainian route now in place. Great news for Europe's energy security!” he added.

As reported, Ukraine signed the transit contract consisting of three documents: the interconnection agreement between the Operator of the Gas Transmission System of Ukraine (OGTSU) and Gazprom, the agreement on the organization of transit between Naftogaz and Gazprom, and the settlement agreement by which Naftogaz and Gazprom recognize the settlement of mutual claims under the 2009 contracts.

Naftogaz noted Gazprom's interest in the possibility of resuming gas supplies to Ukraine in the future, taking into account the principle of gas pricing based on the price of the European hub NCG.

The issue of gas supply is not part of the package deal. The signed agreements also do not concern the lawsuits filed by the Naftogaz Group enterprises against the Russian Federation over the captured Group’s assets in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
