Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal announced a meeting of the State Commission on Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergencies due to the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station by Russian troops.

He reported this on Telegram, according to Ukrinform.

According to Shmyhal, last night Russian troops blew up the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. There is a threat of flooding up to 80 settlements.

"The President of Ukraine has convened the National Security and Defence Council. Next, we will hold a meeting of the State Commission on Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergency Situations," the Prime Minister stressed.

According to him, "We are evacuating residents of the flooded areas. We are currently taking evacuation measures from the Ostriv neighbourhood in Kherson. Evacuation trains have been formed to Mykolaiv. We are estimating the environmental consequences and the threat to the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant. Due to the lack of access to the plant, such an assessment is difficult."

According to Shmyhal, the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP is a terrorist act on which Russia is fully responsible.

"The destruction of the hydroelectric power plant threatens to cause an environmental disaster for the south of our country. The world must respond. It has to react immediately. But not just with words, but with actions. Russia must immediately withdraw from ZNPP to avoid any further catastrophe," he said.
