Journalist Oleksandr Savochenko dies in battle outside Bakhmut

A Ukrainian journalist Oleksandr Savochenko, who volunteered to defend Ukraine as part of the Armed Forces at the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion, was killed in action near Bakhmut.

Before the full-fledged war, Oleksandr Savochenko worked as a journalist in Kyiv: first at the STB TV channel, then at the AFP news agency, and later at the Suspilne public broadcaster. He penned analytical pieces, including on economy and politics.

The journalist lived in Brovary. He is survived by his wife, parents, older brother and grandmother.

Oleksandr was originally from Poliske, Chernihiv region. He graduated from the Nizhyn Regional Pedagogical Lyceum with a medal, as well as from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Oleksandr Savochenko will be buried in his native village of Poliske.

According to IMI, Oleksandr Savochenko is the 37th media representative who was killed as a result of Russian aggression in Ukraine. Eight of them died while performing journalistic duties, 29 died as combatants or as a result of Russian shelling as civilian victims.

Earlier in July, a journalist with the "Road Control Vinnytsia" NGO, a volunteer who joined the Army ranks, Volodymyr Datsenko was killed by a missile strike on Vinnytsia. An M2 music TV channel host, also a military serviceman Karim Gulamov was killed at the front line. Mykola Rachok, a journalist with the InfoCar outlet, who also turned into a soldier, was also killed on the battlefield.
