The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine and calling on Russia to immediately withdraw its troops from the Ukrainian territory.

According to an Ukrinform correspondent in New York, the decision was made with an unprecedented number of votes - 141 countries voted in favor, 5 voted against and 35 abstained. In particular, Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea and Syria voted against.

The UN General Assembly condemned the decision of the Russian Federation of 24 February 2022 on a "special military operation" in Ukraine, expressed serious concern over reports of attacks on civilian objects such as residential buildings, schools and hospitals, as well as civilian casualties, including women, the elderly, the disabled and children.

"The military action of the Russian Federation on the sovereign territory of Ukraine has a scale that the international community has not seen in Europe for decades," the resolution said, "and urgent action is needed to save this generation from the scourge of war."

As reported, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine and launched a large-scale invasion. Russian troops have been shelling and destroying key infrastructure. Missiles hit residential buildings.

Martial law was imposed in Ukraine and general mobilization was announced.

Ukraine officially filed a lawsuit against the Russian Federation with the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague.
