Canada would not change its pro-Ukrainian position even if pressure were exerted by the current U.S. administration.

That is according to Stephen Saideman, head of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs in Ottawa, who shared his view in a comment to Ukrinform.

Saideman said that even if Donald Trump were to pressure Canada, the country would not alter its stance on Ukraine. He noted that this was demonstrated by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's recent speech in Davos and added that this position enjoys strong domestic support.

He also stressed that Canadians of Ukrainian descent constitute an important electoral group, meaning that no Canadian politician seeking to win an election would oppose efforts to support Ukraine.

Saideman said that doing so would be poor and short-sighted policy. While, in his opinion, Trump had turned Republicans in the United States against Ukraine, he said this would not happen in Canada.

As previously reported, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced during a visit to Ukraine last summer that Canada would invest $200 million in the joint production of advanced drones.
