Yevheniia Kravchuk, who was elected chair of the PACE subcommittee on media, will promote the issue of journalists' safety, hold Russia accountable for the killing and illegal imprisonment of media workers, and work on tools to counter disinformation.

The MP shared this information in a comment to Ukrinform's correspondent on the sidelines of the PACE session in Strasbourg.

“This is a very important subcommittee within the Committee on Culture and Information Society, which covers not only the issue of the safety of journalists and the functioning of the media in a democratic society in general, but also issues such as social online platforms. Specifically, how such platforms should be regulated,” Kravchuk said.

She noted that she will continue to work on the investigation of crimes committed by the Russian Federation against journalists and media workers who have been killed, wounded, or illegally imprisoned. The issue of combating disinformation is also relevant.

"The Council of Europe has already announced that it is developing a new convention to combat disinformation. It is clear that tools are needed here and now, and the Council of Europe should use our experience in this fight. Ukraine is facing enormous challenges now, during the war. And the issue of social media, including Telegram, is more acute than in Western European countries," the MP stressed.

According to her, Moldova is a successful example, having acted quickly and effectively and dealt with Russian disinformation during the elections.

"That is why I am very pleased that Moldova, which currently chairs the Council of Europe, has identified the fight against disinformation and interference in elections by undemocratic countries such as Russia as one of its priorities. It is Moldova that is initiating a ministerial conference in Chisinau in March dedicated to this issue. Because this is a problem that concerns many delegates from different countries, especially in the context of interference in their elections," Kravchuk added.

As reported, Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk congratulated Ukrainian parliamentarians who were elected to positions in PACE.

Maria Mezentseva-Fedorenko became Vice-President of PACE, Serhiy Vlasenko headed the Committee on the Election of Judges of the ECHR, Yuliia Ovchinnikova was elected Deputy Chair of the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development, and Yelyzaveta Yasko was elected Deputy Chair of the Committee on the New Democratic Pact.
