There is no objective reason for Ukraine to lose – Tusk
Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk stated this in an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza, Ukrinform reports.
According to him, from the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it became clear that this terrible crisis “poses not only a threat” to Poland. He stressed that, as a result, Poland for various reasons has become “a key country,” and Warsaw “must leverage this strategically in the long term.”
“I hear the question: what do we gain by helping Ukraine? What do you mean, what? In fact, even from the arrival of such a large number of Ukrainian families in Poland, we have gained more advantages than losses!” Tusk emphasized, noting that “it is sometimes exhausting.”
“I understand this fatigue or even irritation, because there is no place in the world where the arrival of such a large number of refugees does not lead to a conflict of interests or clashes of emotions, and this is entirely understandable. Our tragic history does not make this easier, either. But what we consider our great sacrifice is also our great asset, because good relations with Ukraine are in Poland’s interest,” the Polish Prime Minister underscored.
Tusk emphasized that Poland’s geopolitical future will look very bright if Ukraine does not lose the war against Russia and if Kyiv and Warsaw manage to overcome the “historic Polish-Ukrainian animosity.” He stressed that building strong, friendly, and partner relations with a sovereign Ukraine, while protecting Poland’s own interests, is “a tremendous opportunity for Poland.”
“That is why we must focus on helping Ukraine, because if it were to lose the war, Poland’s situation would change dramatically for the worse. However, on this issue, I remain a cautious optimist. There is no objective reason why Ukraine should lose,” Tusk stressed.
As reported, Head of the International Policy Bureau at the Office of the President of Poland, Marcin Przydacz, recently stated that Poland has certain expectations of Ukraine, including regarding difficult historical issues and economic matters. According to him, the previous model of relations with Ukraine, when everything could be resolved with ‘a call to Warsaw’, will not return.
