Nearly 10,000 applications from Ukraine against Russia pending before ECHR – Galushchenko

There are currently nearly 10,000 individual applications from Ukrainian citizens against Russia pending before the European Court of Human Rights.

According to Ukrinform, Minister of Justice German Galushchenko stated this during a television broadcast, responding to a question on whether the consideration of individual applications by Ukrainians against Russia has already begun.

“There are four inter-state cases against Russia before the European Court of Human Rights, and in two of them, truly historic judgments have already been delivered. The Court has, in fact, recognized Russia’s control and violations of human rights in the occupied territories, referring both to those occupied since 2014, namely Crimea and eastern Ukraine, and to the territories occupied after the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation. Accordingly, this paves the way for the submission of individual applications by citizens in an entire category of cases, including those concerning crimes committed in the occupied parts of Ukraine. As of today, there are almost 10,000 such applications before the Court. Their examination will begin precisely because the responsibility of the sovereign has already been established. In this case, the sovereign’s responsibility eliminates the need to prove the fact of the violation of rights,” he said.

Galushchenko added that the state provides assistance in drafting and submitting such applications to the Court.

As reported by Ukrinform, the European Court of Human Rights has begun considering the cases concerning Russia’s 2016 ban on the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People.
