European Council President urges China to help end Russia-Ukraine war
According to Ukrinform, Costa reported on the meeting, as stated by the European Council’s press service.
The two officials discussed EU-China bilateral relations, as well as multilateral and global issues.
“I also raised Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. I expressed the EU’s expectation that China helps to put an end to the war,” Costa said.
The European Council President stressed that the war poses an “existential security threat” to the European Union, adding that the EU will continue to increase pressure on Russia.
Costa also emphasized the need for concrete progress in restoring balance in EU-China trade relations. He shared “strong concern about China’s expanding export controls on critical raw materials and related goods and technologies.”
He called on China to swiftly restore flexible, reliable, and predictable supply chains.
Costa added that combating climate change must remain a priority on the shared agenda, expressing hope that the EU and China will take initiative to achieve progress in this area.
As reported by Ukrinform, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that China is assisting Russia and does not want Ukraine to win and Russia to lose.
Responding to Zelensky’s remarks, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson assured that China plays a constructive role in ending the Russia-Ukraine war and advocates a ceasefire, de-escalation, and political settlement between Russia and Ukraine.
