Netherlands’ DM explains why Europe not invited to Ukraine negotiations
He made this statement in an interview with the Dutch broadcaster Buitenhof, as reported by Ukrinform with reference to nltimes.nl.
“This is because European countries are currently unable to clearly state what we are willing and able to put on the table. There is homework for all European nations,” Brekelmans said.
In his view, the Americans are very pragmatic and inclined to make deals.
“They are saying: if we don’t know what Europe can offer militarily, then we don’t need you at the table,” the Minister noted.
He also supported the position of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who urged Europe to secure a seat at the negotiation table.
Brekelmans emphasized that European countries must prove to Washington that they can make a significant military contribution.
He also refrained from criticizing the U.S. Administration’s approach of making concessions to Russia even before negotiations begin, calling it a reflection of the current military balance.
“Putin is in a stronger position than Zelensky at the moment. Opening bids are necessary,” Brekelmans said.
As Ukrinform previously reported, the Dutch Defense Minister stated that in order to secure a seat at the negotiating table, Europe must demonstrate military strength backed by a strong economy.
