Ukraine seeks China's support at UN Security Council – Sybiha
In exclusive comments to Ukrinform, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha shared details of his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
The Ukrainian side reaffirmed its position on achieving a just and comprehensive peace, Sybiha said.
"We clearly and firmly stated Ukraine's stance -- nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine. It is important for us that China plays a crucial role in this process, especially given that China assumes the UN Security Council presidency this month. Ukraine will initiate a special UNSC session dedicated to the third anniversary of Russia's brutal aggression. We will also initiate a UN resolution," he said.
During the meeting, the Ukrainian delegation briefed Chinese officials on the recent Russian drone strike targeting the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant's sarcophagus, emphasizing the risk of a global-scale nuclear incident. Sybiha stressed that China's role in ensuring global nuclear security is crucial, and Ukraine expects Beijing's support on this sensitive matter.
Sybiha described the meeting as "extremely productive and important."
The Ukrainian side expressed gratitude for China's steadfast support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty, calling it a key priority.
"China remains Ukraine's largest trading partner," the minister said, adding that Beijing has a "direct interest" in restoring free navigation in the Black Sea.
Both sides also discussed a wide range of bilateral issues, and Sybiha invited Wang to visit Ukraine, expressing hope for continued constructive engagement with China.
