Stefanchuk discusses strengthening of air defense capabilities, arms supplies with MEPs
In a post on his Facebook page, Stefanchuk said that he congratulated the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats led by Iratxe García on the election to the European Parliament.
Stefanchuk also thanked the newly elected members of the European Parliament for their strong position and support for key resolutions on Ukraine.
At the meeting, the Ukrainian speaker highlighted the importance of three key issues: the immediate lifting of restrictions on the use of Western weapons, the strengthening of sanctions pressure on Russia, and the provision of additional weapons for Ukraine's defense.
Stefanchuk underscored the significant level of collaboration between the institutions, particularly at the committee level, which is a crucial aspect of Ukraine's path towards the European Union.
He highlighted that the Ukrainian parliament is proactively enacting legislation that is essential for EU membership. Stefanchuk also called for enhanced collaboration between the Ukrainian and European parliaments.
“I devoted particular attention to the matter of defense assistance. I expressed my gratitude to all EU countries for the support they have already provided. However, the current priority for Ukraine is to enhance its air defense capabilities. Another request is for the delivery of the announced weapons to be uninterrupted and timely,” the speaker said.
He also underscored the necessity to intensify sanctions pressure on Russia.
According to Stefanchuk, “sanctions cannot be considered effective as long as Russian weapons contain components manufactured in the EU, as long as the shadow Russian fleet is functioning, and as long as certain sectors of the Russian economy remain unrestricted.”
The parliamentary speaker called for the introduction of measures in new sanctions packages that Russia cannot circumvent.
“Unity, determination and strength of our allies are the key to Ukraine's victory and justice,” Stefanchuk underscored.
As Ukrinform reported, Stefanchuk and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal discussed cybersecurity and measures to counter Russian propaganda.
