The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) has expressed its deep condolences to the loved ones of the victims of a Ukraine International Airlines airplane crash in Iran.

President of the UCC Alexandra Chyczij stated this in a statement on the UIA plane crash near Tehran on January 8.

“On behalf of the UCC, I express my condolences to the families and friends of the victims of this terrible event. We are deeply saddened and shocked by this devastating tragedy, and join Ukraine, Canada, and the international community in mourning. It is particularly tragic to see that so many of the victims were young people. May the Memory of the Victims be Eternal,” Chyczij said.

While the cause of the plane crash has not yet been established, UCC urges all of the national governments involved to work cooperatively on a full investigation.

As reported, a Ukraine International Airlines plane (Flight PS752) heading from Tehran to Kyiv crashed shortly after taking off from the Imam Khomeini International Airport at about 06:00 Tehran time (04:30 Kyiv time) on Wednesday, January 8.

There were 176 people on board the aircraft - 167 passengers (including two Ukrainians) and nine crew (all Ukrainians). Most of the victims of the Ukrainian plane crash in Tehran are citizens of Iran (82) and Canada (63). Those killed in the crash also include ten Swedes, four citizens of Afghanistan, three Germans, and three Britons.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree declaring January 9 the day of mourning due to a Ukrainian plane crash in Iran.
