Foreign Ministry: Ukraine cannot fully satisfy Hungary's claims on language issue

Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister for European Integration Olena Zerkal states that Kyiv will not be able to meet all the interests and desires of the Hungarian national minorities on the language issue.

She said this live on the Channel 5 TV Channel on February 19, adding that Ukraine has its own interests in the development of the state, which in particular depends on the development of the language.

"Unfortunately, we lost a lot of time when we did not address linguistic issues for 25 years. It is impossible to solve this problem without a psychological crisis. We understand what we want to achieve. Of course, we cannot fully satisfy the interests and positions voiced by the Hungarian community. We have our own interests in the development of the state, and the development of the state also depends on the development of the language. Each state is built on the language and culture of this language. All countries passed this, in particular, at the time France banned the use of any language other than French," Zerkal said.

As Ukrinform reported, on February 7, the representatives of the Ukrainian and Hungarian delegations with the participation of Deputy Foreign Minister of Hungary Levente Magyar and Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Vasyl Bodnar agreed in Uzhhorod to hold consultations on February 14 with representatives of the Hungarian community of Zakarpattia regarding the implementation of the new education law.

On February 14, at a government meeting, Ukrainian Education Minister Lilia Hrynevych said that representatives of the Hungarian community refused to participate in consultations with the Education and Science Ministry of Ukraine on the implementation of the language article of the education law.

On the same day, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved a draft amendment to the law on education, which expanded the period of introduction of the language norm until 2023.
